U14 Girls finish 1-1 with Berkhamsted Raiders

Richard Thornton27 Apr - 10:53

A game of two halves

The final home game of the season saw the girls host Berkhamsted Raiders who they had previously drawn and beaten earlier in the season.

A starting line up of Alana in goal with a back four of Bella, Poppy, Ruby and Zara behind a midfield three of Alexia, Alice and Phoebe. The front three were Elina, Isabelle and Lexi with Lucy on the bench.

A bright start saw the girls on the front foot passing nicely forcing corners which were sent in with pinpoint accuracy by Lexi. Unfortunately we couldn’t get on the end of them or find a goal from the goalmouth scrambles.

On 9 minutes some good pressing from Alexia and Isabelle forced a throw deep in the opposition half which Alexia threw to Phoebe who saw the keeper off her line and hit a bouncing ball over the keeper into the roof of the net to put the girls 1-0 up.

Further dangerous corners followed from Lexi but we were unable to add to the scoring.

The defence stood resolute with Poppy and Ruby cutting out attacks from the Berkhamsted wingers while the ever reliable Bella and player of the match Zara worked excellently at centre backs.

The midfield three were working well together and it wasn’t long before having noticed the keeper well off her line that Alice tried her luck with a couple of shots from distance. Alexia was spreading play to the wings for Elina and Isabelle to chase and create chances.

Lucy came off the bench and immediately pressed the opposition defence looking to create an opportunity to add to the scoring.

A warning sign late on in the half when a counter attack required a diving save from Alana to maintain the lead as we went into half time.

One disadvantage of the Berkhamsted keeper’s positioning was that what would normally be tempting through balls for the front three to run onto were won by her either in or out of the penalty area.

This was the case again at the start of the second half when Ruby played the ball up the right to Elina who sent it central for Lexi coming in off the left but the keeper was first to it.

A free kick was awarded to Berkhamsted on the edge of our penalty area but the wall of Alexia, Alice and Elina stood firm to block it and clear.

A clearance from Ruby was received by Alexia who hooked the ball forward into the path of Lucy who shot and only a diving save from the keeper kept the scoreline the same.

Isabelle switched to the right wing and threatened but her cross was well taken by the keeper.

With time running out a long Berkhamsted throw went over the defence and the resulting cross fell to an unmarked player to equalise.

A late corner for Berkhamsted brought a chance which went wide and the match ended 1-1 in what was an even match played in good spirits.
