U14 Girls beat St Albans City 9-1 to clinch title
By Richard Thornton
With the sun out but a strong wind blowing across pitch 5 the girls knew a win would secure the division 2 title irrespective of other results.
Wearing a changed kit of blue the girls were on the front foot pressing from the kick off and looked sharp and up for the task in hand.
On 8 minutes a throw in from Molly Charnock evaded the St Albans defence and keeper leaving Hollie Thornton a tap in to make it 1-0. Three minutes later a throw on the left from Ida Sondergaard found Tatyana Barton to make it 2-0.
On 19 minutes St Albans broke away to pull a goal back and give the girls something to think about. However it didn’t phase them as straight from kick off Rheilly Evans hit the ball forward and Eliza Telford beat the defence to make it 3-1.
With time running out in the first half Eliza Telford hit the post and Tatyana Barton was first to react and made it 4-1.
The second half started well for the girls and on 44 minutes Eliza Telford played a perfect cross field pass to Yasmin Howgego who shot but the keeper saved it and again Tatyana Barton reacted first to knock in the rebound for her hat trick.
Tatyana Barton turned provider on 47 minutes when she played the ball to Hollie Thornton who fired home with her left foot. Three minutes later it was 7-1 when the returning Katie Leigh beat the keeper.
On 61 minutes Rheilly Evans hit the ball up field for Tatyana Barton to race onto and calmly beat the keeper for her fourth to make it 8-1.
With the end of the match approaching a corner from Rheilly Evans was headed home by a trademark Ida Sondergaard goal to finish at 9-1 and the league title safely in our possession.
A fantastic season and great work from all the girls. The force was with us on Star Wars day!
