Herts Reds Away.
Following the Easter recess Coach JN had the luxury of 10 players for this evening fixture at the Warner Playing Fields, Hemel.
Team – Gwen, Sophie, Mabel, Alecia, Charlotte, Maisy, Daisy, Millie, Meeka, Jess
The girls could have taken the lead early on with Charlotte having two attempts saved from well worked lead up play with Millie and Meeka.
The Reds no. 12 had a couple of powerful long range chances that flew over the goal.
Maisy displaying good tidy skills and neat passing, Sophie heading well in centre back position, Charlotte another chance saved, Millie hits wide
Game stops. Referee points to the penalty, not quite sure what for, anyway dead ball specialist Mabel is encouraged to step forward and confidently drills the ball low into the bottom corner giving the keeper no chance 0-1
Reds No. 8 Precious always a threat breaks free of the defensive live for a 1 on 1 with Gwen who makes a good save low to her left.
Millie not quite finding her usual rhythm after the Easter break overruns a clear break that she would normally put away.
Meeka making good attacking runs down the right flank helped by the long grass and deep sink lines hugging the bright green ball along the line like a bowling alley gutter, gets in a dangerous cross which a retreating reds defender knocks into their own net, 0-2
Reds playing well, creating chances on the left side, go direct route 1 straight from a long goal kick, ball sits up nicely for No. 8 Precious who strikes the ball cleanly past Gwen 1-2.
Free kick no. 12 strikes, Gwen flaps a big hand to push the ball wide
Half time 1-2
JN rotating the subs keeping the girls fresh
Reds move forward, our Girls caught napping, No. 5 hits wide. Girls losing concentration, ball watching, half asleep (too many Easter eggs perhaps!) inviting the Reds back into the game. Alecia makes some crucial last line of defence tackles, strong in contact allowing the defence to regroup
Maisy, Meeka, Millie axis combining well but not clicking in the final third of the pitch to convert into decent goal scoring chances.
Daisy making tackles, moving forward with Jess in support, Millie shoots, saved
Game then settles into a competitive goal kick contest, not the greatest spectacle, but the keepers seemed to enjoy it. Gwen almost scored! Meeka ended the goal kick ping-pong with a quick bit of skill in the box, turning the defenders inside then outside followed by a neat finish into the corner of the net to give the girls a two goal cushion. 1-3
Scrappy play proceeded by both teams, with neither side really taking responsibility to win the game - Reds entering unfamiliar ground of winning matches and the girls almost too polite to finish the job – after you, no after you…..
Reds No. 10 now getting into advanced positions, walks through the defence to bundle the ball past a lunging Gwen into the net. 2-3. Away supporters anxious now.
Reds press forward, yellows not marking allowing the reds too much space, pressure mounts forcing a despairing lunge from Sophie in the box to concede a penalty in the final stages…. much to her father’s protestations of a dive!
Up steps the big powerful figure of the no. 12, takes a long run up and ……fires the ball up and over the bar far into the trees. Whistle blows. Final score 2-3. A lucky escape for the girls.
