U13 Girls beat St Albans City North 4-2
By Richard Thornton
End of season derby close but girls come out winning.
Harvesters U13 Girls played their final league match of the season away at St Albans City North in early evening sunshine.
The early stages were close with both teams having periods of possession on a hard, bouncy pitch. St Albans forced a corner on 21 minutes which was swung in and took a deflection to give them a 1-0 lead.
The girls didn’t let it affect them and took control from the kick off to force a corner their own. Rheilly Evans delivered a perfect corner onto the head of the waiting Ida Sondergaard to head home to equalise.
St Albans kicked off but pressure from Eliza Telford saw her win the ball and she put in a pass to Hollie Thornton to score at the second attempt and Harvesters were 2-1 ahead.
Rheilly Evans hit the bar with a well struck free kick. Five minutes before half time St Albans broke through the Harvesters defence and equalised to make it 2-2 at the break.
Two minutes into the second half Lily Palmer won the ball in the St Albans half and drove forward. It looked like an opportunity to shoot but instead she drifted past a defender and whipped in a perfect cross for Hollie Thornton to volley home to restore the lead at 3-2.
In a three minute spell of madness Harvesters were awarded a penalty which struck the post only to be cleared for a corner. The corner was then handled by a defender for another penalty which was saved by the keeper. Within a minute Lily Palmer had hit the cross bar.
On 56 minutes Priya Crawford won the ball on the half way line and a quick pass to Eliza Telford saw her weave through the St Albans midfield and defence taking the ball into the penalty area before beating the keeper to make it 4-2.
The defence dug deep and kept St Albans out to see the girls to victory.
