A Game of Four Halves !
As the league tries to make up for all the lost matches during our never-ending Winter we find ourselves in Borehamwood for a midweek double header !
With kick-off at 18:25 the sun is fading, the wind is up and the fans are universally under dressed for the occasion.
With Borehamwood probably the strongest attacking side in the league we are starting with a more defensively minded midfield than usual. Gwen, as ever, is between the posts with Daisy, Izzy and Alecia in front of her. Meek, Sophie and Jess are in midfield with Maisie and Florence up front. With only Charlotte on the bench this is going to be a tough evening for the girls.
As expected Borehamwood are on the attack from the first whistle and they dominate the first 5 minutes with 3 shots only just off target. Harvesters manage to weather the storm and some great defending by Daisy gives us a lift and we enjoy a period of possession. With 10 minutes gone Charlotte comes on for Alecia and we push forward and win a corner. The corner is well taken but the keeper has her defenders well organised and collects the ball with some authority.
18:36 – GOAL ! Borehamwood ease ahead with a very well taken goal cutting in from the right. Gwen gets her fingertips to it but there is too much power in the shot.
The last 10 minutes of the half are end to end with Florence shooting just over and Borehamwood hitting the side netting. In the closing minutes of the first half Florence is brought down just outside the box when she looked clean through. Charlotte strikes the free-kick beautifully and it clears the wall and only a Hollywood save from the keeper preserves their clean sheet before the half time whistle blows.
The second half gets underway with Alecia on for Daisy and Harvesters enjoy the early possession with 3 corners in the opening 5 minutes of the half. But it is not long before Borehamwood regain their composure and rattle the Harvesters cross bar as they look for that all important second goal. Jess comes on for Florence as we prepare to defend against a Borehamwood corner which is headed just wide of the upright. But the second goal does come in the very next attack with a thunderous ball crashing in off the underside of the crossbar. 2-0 to Borehamwood but still 10 minutes to play.
The final 10 minutes play out with no further goals but plenty of chances at both ends the pick of the bunch being a fine strike from Daisy which their keeper manages to tip round the post.
Final score for Match #1 2-0
And just 10 minutes later the second game is underway despite growing concerns about the light.
Florence starts in place of Maisie and we dominate the opening exchanges forcing a couple of corners. Maisie comes back on for Meeka and we force another corner. The corners are being taken well by Charlotte but the Borehamwood keeper seems to be able to gather anything that comes into the box. Now Borehamwood put us under some pressure and Gwen produces a brace of top class saves before being finally beaten 10 minutes into the first half. 1-0 to the home side.
Meeka comes on for Sophie and it is all Harvesters. The 10 minutes that take us through to half time see no fewer than 5 corners for Harvesters but the Borehamwood keeper equal to all of them.
The second half sees Sophie on for Izzy and our lack of subs is really starting to show. Home advantage also starts to show as the light fades rapidly. No floodlights here !
Despite fantastic efforts on goal from Florence and Charlotte our tired legs cannot prevent Borehamwood from scoring 3 goals in the last 15 minutes. That’s a harsh scoreline but we can take great pride in the way we played away from home and short on numbers against one of the strongest sides in the league.
Final score for Match #2 4-0
